Ellen Scanlon (00:52):

Next week, How to do the Pot has a new episode in our Weed Word Series, which unpacks a widely recognized, but narrowly understood term related to cannabis. We’ll be talking about kind of a controversial word, stoner. I hope you enjoy the trailer for, I was Never There

Speaker 2 (01:17):

In 1985. Marsha Mud Ferber took the stage at the Underground Railroad, a bar. She owned in Morgantown, West Virginia to hold an election.

Speaker 3 (01:27):

Let’s hear it from Ronald Reagan. And now given the choice, would you vote for Harriet Tubman? All right, Harriet Tubman is president of the 123 Pleasant Street, Morgantown, West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (01:40):

Marsha was a political radical and a hippie with a flare for the dramatic.

Speaker 4 (01:45):

The first time I saw Marsha, she was walking down high street singing at the top of her lungs, let’s get drunk and screw.

Speaker 2 (01:52):

Everywhere. Marsha went, she built community.

Speaker 5 (01:54):

And she was all about redistribution of wealth. She’d share her panties.

Speaker 6 (01:58):

She raised the consciousness of West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (02:01):

And then one day in April 1988, she disappeared.

Speaker 7 (02:07):

Marsha was last seen April 25th. All that was missing was her backpack. Her car was left at a parking meter. Belongings left in an apartment above the bar.

Speaker 2 (02:17):

I’m Jamie Zellermayer. I was raised communally by a bunch of hippies who had a lot of fun and did a lot of drugs. That’s how I knew Marsha growing up. She was like a second mom to me.

Speaker 8 (02:28):

And I’m Karen Zellermayer. Jamie’s back to the land, hippie mom. Marsha was one of my best friends.

Speaker 2 (02:36):

We’ve decided to go back in time, talking to people from her past and hours to try and figure out what happened.

Speaker 8 (02:44):

But the more we spoke to people, the more I realized there was a lot of going on that I knew nothing about.

Speaker 9 (02:52):

She was possibly murdered by some drug dealer types.

Speaker 10 (02:56):

The pot business funded, everything.

Speaker 11 (02:58):

We were in South America, Marsha and I, we were in trouble.

Speaker 2 (03:01):

This podcast is about Marsha Ferber.

Speaker 8 (03:04):

But it’s also about us.

Speaker 12 (03:05):

So I’ve said this about a million times, but what the fuck were you thinking?

Speaker 8 (03:11):

I wasn’t, but would I do anything differently? I’m almost embarrassed to say probably not.

Speaker 2 (03:18):

This is, I was Never There. Listen, wherever you get your podcasts.
