Welcome to How to Do the Pot, a podcast demystifying cannabis for women. I’m Ellen Scanlon. On these short episodes, we share women’s stories about the first time they bought legal weed. I hope they bring a little fun and a new perspective into your week. In honor of National Dessert Day, which is today, we partnered with Monica Lo, a California based chef and creator of the food blog, Sous Weed, to bring you some delicious honey shortbread cookies made with cannabis infused sous weed honey to go with your bedtime tea. You can see it all on Instagram @dothepot and @sousweed. That’s S-O-U-S-W-E-E-D. And stay tuned for How to Do the Pot’s upcoming episodes about cannabis and sleep, and how these yummy cookies maybe just what you need for a better night’s rest.

Monica Lo (00:59):

The first time I bought legal weed was with my California Medical Cannabis card that I had gotten when I had my back injury. My roommate and I, at the time, went to stock up on all the goods at our local neighborhood dispensary, just to try a bunch of things for pain management. We went inside. The interior of the shop was done up like the cigar lounge, and it had really nice warm tones, and woods, and leather, so it felt cozy, and not sketchy, at all. There was this epic menu with different flowers and edibles. And, to be honest, I felt it was a little intimidating, especially the first time being in a dispensary. I didn’t know what I was reading. But this was back in the day, where it was okay to ask for the jars, and you could open it up and smell all the different strains. I remember I really enjoyed doing that, and I learned a lot that way too.

Monica Lo (02:00):

I wound up taking home a bag of trim to use in my sous weed experiments, because it was much cheaper to use trim than purchasing all the premium flour. I also bought some chocolates and macaroons to try out, as well. I remember when I was checking out, they dropped in some free brownies into my bag. I don’t think it’s allowed these days, but I remember taking them home and trying them, and they were so gross, and so stale. Yeah, that was nasty. Homemade, for sure, definitely is where it’s at.
