[00:01:14] Ellen Scanlon: The election day countdown is finally over. Have you voted yet? Whether you’re on the way to the polls or you sent in your ballot weeks ago, let’s take a deep breath, right? It’s been a long, crazy trip to get here. And let’s take a minute to celebrate. If you listened to our election episode last week, you’ll remember that this is the first time in history that both presidential candidates have a public position on cannabis.
[00:01:46] Ellen Scanlon: That progress truly is worth celebrating. I knew that today’s episode was coming out on election day, and I figured a light, fun distraction might be welcome. So today’s episode is a good natured strain battle between two very famously named strains, Kamala Kush and Trump OG. Have Pot’s Essential Strains series yet?
[00:02:15] Ellen Scanlon: It’s a growing list of strains that I think everyone should have in their cannabis collection. You may not need them all, but having two or three strains that you love can help you feel more confident and less overwhelmed when you walk into a dispensary. By telling a Budtender the name of a strain that you like, they can guide you to similar strains that will help you feel just the way you want.
[00:02:40] Ellen Scanlon: I’ll add a link in the show notes to a special Spotify playlist that includes all of our Essential Strains episodes. The list is also on our website, DoThePot. com. In today’s episode, we’ll battle it out between these two relaxing and sleep inducing strains. Many people across the country are very stressed right now, so it’s a perfect time for two strains with cozy vibes.
[00:03:09] Ellen Scanlon: I’ll share the history of how Kamala Kush and Trump OG came to be, tell you how they’ll make you feel, and offer some ideas for what these two strains can inspire. It’s a super tight election, and as these iconically named strains battle it out, do you think we can predict the winner? Which strain will you choose?

[00:04:43] Ellen Scanlon: I was surprised to learn that there are quite a few weed strains named after politicians. There’s Obamacush, Sleepy Joe Sour Diesel, and the memorably named RFK Jr. Brain Worm Wowie.
[00:05:02] Ellen Scanlon: Arizona Senator and ex astronaut Mark Kelly has his own strain, Space Kelly, and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has said that he is honored to have Murphy Sours named after him. If you happen to try any of these, please reach out, I’d love to hear what you think. Today’s episode is a face off between the top contenders on the ticket.
[00:05:26] Ellen Scanlon: We have Trump OG, the strain with a celebrity lineage that’s perfect for swapping the spotlight for a cozy bathrobe. And Kamala Kush, a dreamy strain that’s all about unwinding after a busy day. Let’s get ready to battle.
[00:05:48] Ellen Scanlon: Kamala Kush was introduced in 2020 by Alibi Cannabis, a women owned company based in Oregon. It was inspired by a uniquely vibrant Hindu Kush plant. Founder Marianne Kersagee thought Kamala Kush would be a catchy name to try ahead of the 2020 election. The strain quickly went viral with fans eager to try this relaxation inducing option, and it sold out almost immediately.
[00:06:19] Ellen Scanlon: This past June, Kamala Harris even had a laugh about it on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And just in time for this election season, Kamala Kush is making a comeback. Kamala Kush is descended from a Hindu Kush plant, and it will usually be labeled as an indica in dispensaries. Kush strains are some of the most popular available on the market today.
[00:06:42] Ellen Scanlon: Kamala Kush has a sweet, earthy aroma, almost like sandalwood. If you can’t find this exact strain, you’ll feel pretty similar effects with Hindu Kush. What does it help with? Kamala Kush will relax your body, help if you’re struggling with insomnia, and it can bring relief to chronic pain. How high will I get?
[00:07:07] Ellen Scanlon: Kamala Kush can be potent, so please pay attention to the percentage of THC, which is the intoxicating part of the plant. To give you some guardrails, THC levels above 20 percent are considered high, so just take it slow. Start with a small puff, then wait 15 or 20 minutes before trying any more. How will it make me feel?
[00:07:33] Ellen Scanlon: Kamala Kush will relax you from the inside out, releasing the tension from your mind and body, and encouraging a sense of calm and well being. This strain is extremely chill and really benefits people who are suffering from feelings of stress or pain. You can expect to feel at ease, maybe flat on your couch, and you might be so relaxed that you just fall asleep.
[00:08:01] Ellen Scanlon: What will it inspire? Let me set the stage for your night with Kamala Kush. If you’re channeling her directly, maybe you’re putting on some Beyonce, Lemonade, or Cowboy Carter, after you take your first hit. You’ll feel your mood begin to lighten, which is a great time to stretch and move your body. Or maybe you’re a little hungry and want to curl up with a bowl of heartwarming food.
[00:08:29] Ellen Scanlon: Treat yourself and order in some of Kamala’s go to meals. Spaghetti and meatballs, roti, or curry. Now it’s time to put the TV on. I’ll suggest Golden Girls, one of Kamala’s favorite shows, before you drift off into a blissful night’s rest. Sounds like a nice Kamala approved evening, right? And for today’s battle, what do you think?
[00:08:55] Ellen Scanlon: Will Kamala Kush earn a spot in your relaxing strain rotation?
[00:09:07] Ellen Scanlon: I want to introduce you to 1906, a cannabis brand focused on microdosing. The company is named after the last year that cannabis was widely accepted as medicine. And 1906 products are a modern approach to weed. If you’re new to microdosing or just curious, try their Discovery Pack, which includes effects like sleep, love, and chill.
[00:09:33] Ellen Scanlon: 1906 microdose products ship nationwide. Visit 1906. shop and use promo code DOTHEPOT for 15 percent off your order. I’ll add all the details to the show notes. Thank you for supporting the brands that support our show. Trump
[00:09:57] Ellen Scanlon: OG is a relaxing strain created from a cross of OG Kush, one of how to do the pot’s essential strains and presidential OG. The origins of this strain are unknown, but it has some ties to the Colorado mountains. Trump OG smells like lemon and spicy herbs and has a musky, fruity flavor. It is a surprisingly different flavor profile from Trump’s favorite meal, two McDonald’s Big Macs, one filet of fish, fries, and a Diet Coke.
[00:10:33] Ellen Scanlon: What does it help with? Trump OG helps with insomnia, chronic pain, migraines or headaches, and fatigue. How high will I get? Trump OG is a potent strain, and its heavy, sedative effects can sneak up on you, which is why it’s so good for getting to sleep. How will it make me feel? Trump OG can send you down a nice tunnel of light thinking, soft giggles, and eventually deep sleep.
[00:11:08] Ellen Scanlon: It’ll help you decompress and relieve anxiety after a long day. Set yourself up for success though. I don’t recommend starting any big projects or tasks that require a lot of thought. It’ll probably be too much for your very relaxed mind and body. What will it inspire? Trump OG will wrap you up in a cozy euphoric cloud.
[00:11:34] Ellen Scanlon: Try adding a weighted blanket, dim lighting, and a loud alarm clock because you may fall into a long night’s sleep. If you want to add the Trump touch to your evening, absolutely have a diet Coke or a dozen diet Cokes. He apparently drinks them all day, every day. The bright side of so many diet Cokes is that you’re guaranteed not to have any cotton mouth.
[00:12:02] Ellen Scanlon: Turn on The Bachelor or The Simpsons, two of his favorite shows, lie down and enjoy a great night’s rest. What do you think? Is Trump OG a contender for your sleepy strain stash?
[00:12:23] Ellen Scanlon: Whatever political side you’re on, Kamala Kush and Trump OG will both help you relax during this intense election day. Enjoy a puff and lock into the present moment with some deep breaths, a walk outside or a long nap. You and your body deserve it. This election day, I’m keeping myself busy by spending time with friends, finally getting to a doctor’s appointment I’ve been putting off and not putting too much pressure on myself to get a lot done.
[00:12:56] Ellen Scanlon: If you’re voting for Kamala, why not try relaxing with her favorite form of exercise, yoga? Or if you’re a Trump fan, try his favorite pastime, a round of golf. So who will win this strain battle? Do you want to let Kamala Kush sweep you off your feet and into a state of chill? Or are you ready to relax and fall into a deep sleep with Trump OG?
[00:13:21] Ellen Scanlon: If only all votes were this easy. With either of these two strains, you really can’t lose. Which is your favorite? Help us choose the winner by reaching out at DoThePot on socials or email hi at DoThePot. If you liked this episode, please share it with a friend.
