Happy new year. Are you trying a dry January this year, swapping out alcohol for the month? Or maybe you were one of the 25 percent of Americans who tried it last year. So why are we talking about alcohol on a podcast about alcohol? Weed, because in 2024 data from the national survey on drug use and health revealed that for the first time ever, more people in the U S are daily cannabis consumers than daily drinkers.[00:01:00]
This is very big news, and it’s creating new conversations about health, well being, and how Americans are rethinking what’s quote, good for us. The shift is especially striking among younger people. Of Americans in their early 20s. Three out of four people tried dry January last year. That’s an incredibly high number.
And the trend of drinking less is really gaining momentum. As we kick off the new year, it feels like a good time to step back and reconsider alcohol’s role in all our lives. In our new three part series, we’ll explore how the dramatic changes in people’s views about alcohol over the past century may offer lessons for cannabis.
Here’s a fun fact. [00:02:00] In the early 1900s, alcohol was the most hated substance in America. It was banned during prohibition for 13 years. Fast forward a century and alcohol has become a cultural staple. It’s a multi billion dollar industry with iconic brands, there’s mommy wine culture, and it has a presence at almost every adult level.
So what can the history of alcohol teach us about cannabis? With legalization just over a decade old in some states, will we become as common or as deeply woven into our culture as alcohol? Of course, we are spotlighting women who played pivotal roles in both the prohibition and re legalization of [00:03:00] alcohol.
What role will women play in shaping the future of cannabis? You’ll hear from women all across the country about how cannabis is changing their relationship with alcohol, helping them feel better, and offering a welcome new option for socializing.
