Welcome to How to Do the Pot, a podcast demystifying cannabis for women. I’m Ellen Scanlon. On these short episodes, we share women’s stories about the first time they bought legal weed. I hope they bring a little fun and a new perspective into your week.
Ellen Lee Scanlon (00:24):
Today’s guest, a chef, chocolatier and founder of Marigold Sweets. Vanessa Lavorato is also well known for her time as co-host of Vice’s Bong Appétit cooking show. And if you’re in San Francisco this weekend for Outside Lands, Vanessa will be onstage for some really fun food demos at Grass Lands this Friday. Grass Lands is a newish part of the festival and for its third year there are even more cannabis themed activities, including performances at the Grass Land stage, a farmer’s market dispensary, consumption areas, more demos, music and comedy all weekend long.
Ellen Lee Scanlon (01:03):
Vanessa’s story also brings up something that’s been on my mind a lot, so much about buying legal weed depends on where you live and next month we’re starting a new series about what’s different in a state with medical cannabis or a state with adult use cannabis. Remember, adult use means anyone over 21 can buy it.
Ellen Lee Scanlon (01:24):
Stay tuned for lots more about these differences and why they matter for you, plus practical tips about how to navigate shopping for weed where you live.
Vanessa Lavorato (01:36):
The first time I bought legal weed was right after California legalized. And I guess so legal weed, I’m like, okay, what do you mean? Medicinal weed? That would have been in Berkeley with a medical card and I got some edibles, a snickerdoodle and I think an Auntie Dolores brownie. Recreational weed was after California legalized in 2017, I went to Cornerstone and celebrated with everything I could buy. Edibles, flour. It was a long time ago, I can’t really remember too well. But then technically it’s legal weed, does that exist as long as the federal government has it as a Schedule 1? You could say I’ve never had legal weed.
